1-6-2011 SnowBall Music & Ski Festival: Dead Winter Man, Pert Near Sandstone @ Papa Charlie’s Lutsen, MN

I was entirely happy to be on the North Shore of Lake Superior perched on Eagle Ridge amongst Lutsen Mountains on my birthday. Live music from great bands who include friends of mine was truly another absolute bonus.  The time I had skiing was beyond amazing too.  After all, this is just another form of dancing.

Dead Man Winter

Dead Man Winter were a refreshing blast of imaginative northern roots meets rock tinged with Americana explosions. I heard influences from Gram Parsons to the Band.  Their set was packed with punch spiced with some Dylan & songs from DMW’s 2010 EP Wolves (Banjodad Records) like “A long cold night in Minneapolis” & “New Orleans” which is an electrified revamped Trampled By Turtles song.

DMW are: leader Dave Simonett on guitar & vocals, Erik Koskinen, banjo Dave Carroll, Ryan David Young, Tim Saxhaug & Noah Levy.

Pert Near Sandstone continues to shake the foundations of Minnesota’s blazing hot freakgrass movement after years on the scene.  They tore it up feverishly all night at one point bringing up the entire Sans Souci Quartet for some sweet song & jam.

The pickin’ was fiery.  Northerner American string band PNS well represents the best of old time music being kept alive.

What a freaking boot stomping great time I had on my bday on the mountain… so far!  Thanks to all involved, including Big Country & Joey for my bday jam.

  1. Jesse says:

Nice work on the blog! I had such a great time too. I still think Dead Man Winter stole the show…

  2. Thanks for the great post on Snowball at Lutsen. It really is one of our families favorite events to go to in Minnesota. The music, beauty of the area, outdoor fun and fabulous peeps make for great memories. I have an affinity for those Northland Freaks! Big Country, Sonja Bjordal and Joey play every Wednesday at Carmody’s an Irish Pub on Superior Street in Duluth. Peace!
